Biography

Delos Hamilton Smith was born on May 10, 1884 in Willcox, Arizona. He received both his B.S and M.S. in Architecture from George Washington University in Washington DC. In his lifetime, Smith held various positions as both an architect and an architectural historian. He became president of the Baltimore Chapter of AIA in 1923 and would go on to become president of the DC Chapter just a year later in 1924. Smith became a Fellow of the AIA in 1952. Smith worked in the Office of Supervising Architect of the Treasury in 1906 and later was Supervising Architect of the U.S. Naval Academy. Smith held his own practice from 1916 to 1924, 1934 to 1940, and 1945 to 1960. Smith held various partnerships in the time between these dates. He passed away in Alexandria, Virginia on July 21, 1963.
