Biography

James R. Edmunds Jr. was born on April 1st, 1890 in Baltimore, MD. Edmunds would go on to receive his Bachelors of Science in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1912. He later worked in the office of well-known Baltimore architect, Joseph Evans Sperry , eventually becoming a partner of Sperry’s firm in 1923. Also in 1923, Edmunds became a member of the Baltimore chapter of the AIA. He then began a partnership with Herbert G. Crisp around 1930 as Crisp and Edmunds. This partnership served to be fruitful for Edmunds as he became president of the Baltimore AIA chapter from 1935-1936 and was made an AIA Fellow the following year in 1937. Edmunds began his own firm in 1939, where he would eventually work with his son and future AIA Baltimore chapter president, James Edmunds III. Edmunds would go on to become National AIA President from 1945-1947 in addition to becoming a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Edmunds most famous work is the 1931 Hutzler’s Tower, a remarkable brick art deco addition to Hutzler’s main department store on Howard Street.
