The Bay Shore Amusement Park opened in 1906. Designed by Simonson & Pietsch for a streetcar company called the United Railways and Electric Company, this park served as a popular destination for recreation of all kinds. On the Chesapeake Bay, it offered swimming and other attractions, such as a fountain, for the whole family to leave the city behind in exchange for more bucolic pleasures. At the time, it was common for streetcar companies to build parks that would attract riders as well as park customers. This was the case for the Bay Shore Amusement Park, and while it can no longer be accessed by streetcar, it still provides easy outdoor access. The work of Simonson & Pietsch lives on in the pier, pavilion, and fountain.
